Why does my PDF look blurry after compression?

If a PDF looks blurry after compression, compare it with the original before trying another export. AlphaPDF’s stronger compression setting can reduce image detail; enlarging the blurry result is not a way to recover missing detail.

Find where the blur began

Open the original and compressed copy at comparable zoom levels. Look at the same small text, diagram labels or photograph. If the source is already unclear, changing an export preset cannot supply information that was never captured clearly.

Use the original for the next attempt

Keep an untouched source copy. Reprocessing an already degraded version makes it harder to judge what changed. AlphaPDF’s compression guidance explicitly advises keeping the original because lossy image compression cannot restore removed detail.

Steps in AlphaPDF

1. Open the original PDF in AlphaPDF’s compression workflow.
2. Choose Export and use High quality or another less aggressive option than the one that produced the unacceptable result.
3. Save the new export under a different name when your allowance permits.
4. Compare the same difficult page in both outputs and the source.

Check the result

Check numbers, punctuation, fine lines and image labels, not just large headings. Choose the result that remains usable for the actual reader, and verify its file size if a submission limit applies.

A larger, readable file may be preferable to a smaller unusable one. If the source itself is unreadable, obtain a clearer source where possible; this workflow does not promise scan enhancement or OCR repair.
