High quality, Balanced or Smallest file: choosing a PDF export preset

Start with the content that is hardest to read

Small labels, faint scans, diagrams and detailed images deserve attention before choosing stronger compression. A short text document and an image-heavy report may respond differently to the same preset.

What the three labels mean

The live editor describes High quality as the sharpest option with a larger file, Balanced as the recommended middle option, and Smallest file as more compression with visible blur. These labels describe the tradeoff; they do not quantify the result for your document.

Steps in AlphaPDF

1. Open the PDF using the compression tool.
2. Choose Export and the output mode that matches the task. Quality and page selection are separate choices.
3. Start with Balanced unless your document’s needs suggest a different option.
4. Export when an allowance is available, save the file and compare its actual size and readability with the source.

Check the result

Inspect the most demanding page at a comfortable reading zoom. If important detail is degraded, return to the original and choose a less aggressive option. If there is a submission-size cap, compare the saved bytes with that cap.

Not every PDF becomes smaller. Keep the original; repeated experimentation can require additional successful exports under the current allowance rules.
