How to combine selected pages from two PDFs
Build one PDF from excerpts in two source files, map the right pages, choose extraction and check what the final packet includes and excludes.
To combine selected pages from two PDFs, open both files in one workspace, arrange the wanted pages in reading order, and export using Extract selected pages. In AlphaPDF, One PDF exports every page in the workspace, even when only a few pages are selected. The selection and the export mode must agree.
This is useful when a recipient needs a report summary followed by a supporting appendix, rather than both complete documents. Keep the original PDFs separately and plan the new packet before uploading.
Make a page map before selecting anything
Use a file name plus a page position to identify each page. “Page 2” alone is ambiguous when both files have one. A printed page number can also differ from the page's position in the file; see how to map printed numbers to file positions.
Here is a hypothetical seven-page source set: Report A has four pages, and Appendix B has three. The recipient wants Report A pages 1 and 3, followed by Appendix B page 2.
| Output position | Source file | Position in source | Content to check |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Report A | 1 | Summary heading |
| 2 | Report A | 3 | Findings heading |
| 3 | Appendix B | 2 | Supporting schedule |
The target is three pages. The exclusion list is A2, A4, B1 and B3. A correct page count alone is insufficient: A1, A2, B2 would also contain three pages but the wrong information.
Combine the excerpts in AlphaPDF
- Open both source PDFs. Start with the AlphaPDF merge PDF tool and choose both files. Wait for the editor and its page previews to load.
- Identify pages by content and source. Compare each preview with your map. If you upload A before B and leave the initial order unchanged, the source set is A1, A2, A3, A4, B1, B2, B3. Appendix B page 2 is then the sixth workspace page, not the second.
- Arrange the reading order. Drag pages in the page rail if your requested order differs from the initial order. Recheck the content after moving anything. The export follows workspace order, not the order in which you click selection buttons.
- Select only the wanted pages. Use each page's selection control for export. In this example, select A1, A3 and B2 and confirm that three pages are selected. You can leave unwanted pages unselected in the workspace.
- Choose the matching export mode. Open Export and choose Extract selected pages. Check the selected count again. Do not choose One PDF while unwanted pages remain; do not choose a split ZIP if the recipient needs one continuous document.
- Download and inspect the result. Export with an available allowance, then save a distinct file such as
summary-and-schedule.pdf. Open the downloaded PDF, rather than relying on the workspace preview.
For more detail on the selection controls, use the single-document extraction guide. For the difference between a complete PDF, a selection and separate sections, read the export-mode guide.
Check both inclusion and exclusion
Read the final file from beginning to end. Confirm the three intended page identities, their sequence and the absence of all four excluded pages. Check headings, tables and page edges at a readable zoom. If one source has a newer revision, compare dates or version labels too.
For this guide, we tested two synthetic PDFs containing four and three labeled pages. Selecting A1, A3 and B2 and using extraction produced one three-page PDF in that order. This checks the simple page-assembly workflow; it does not establish that every form, signature or other interactive feature will survive a merge unchanged.
What this workflow does not guarantee
Excluding pages does not remove sensitive information from pages you keep. Review the retained content separately. AlphaPDF's live merge page also warns that combining pages can affect existing digital signatures and form-field behavior. Keep signed originals and check any form answers in the final reader before sharing.
As background, Adobe documents arranging and removing pages before combining and extracting pages into a new document. Those are Acrobat instructions; the AlphaPDF steps above use the controls verified in its live editor.
Open AlphaPDF's merge tool, prepare your source-to-output page map, and check the final download against it.
