How to remove blank pages from a scanned PDF
Check blank backs, faint notes and intentional dividers before deleting pages. Follow a six-page example and verify the saved PDF.
GuidesTo remove blank pages from a scanned PDF, inspect each suspected blank at a readable size, delete only the pages you have confirmed are unnecessary, then export a new copy and check its page count. Do not delete every second page just because the scan came from a two-sided scanner: one reverse side may contain a faint note or continuation text.
First, decide whether the page is really blank
A thumbnail is useful for finding candidates, but it is too small for the final decision. Open the page in the large preview and check its center, corners and edges. Compare it with the paper original if you have one.
- Empty reverse side: no information appears on the scan or the original. It may be a candidate for removal from your working copy.
- Faint content: light pencil, a pale stamp or a small note still counts as content. Keep it; rescan if the important details are hard to read.
- Intentional blank: a divider or a page marked “intentionally blank” may preserve the structure of a packet. Keep it if the recipient expects that structure.
- Unexpected white page: if the original contains text but the preview is white, check the file in another PDF reader before deciding to remove anything.
Being unable to select text does not prove a page is empty. A scanned page can contain text as an image. Adding a note is a separate task; see how to add text to a scanned PDF.
A six-page example: keep the faint reverse side
Suppose three sheets were scanned on both sides, creating six PDF pages. This is an illustrative example, not a rule for your file:
- Original PDF page 1: first sheet, front — keep.
- Original PDF page 2: first sheet, empty back — remove after checking.
- Original PDF page 3: second sheet, front — keep.
- Original PDF page 4: second sheet, back with a faint note — keep.
- Original PDF page 5: third sheet, front — keep.
- Original PDF page 6: third sheet, empty back — remove after checking.
The expected result is 6 − 2 = 4 pages, in the original order 1, 3, 4, 5. Removing every even-numbered page would also remove the note on original page 4.
If you recorded page positions before editing, work from the last unwanted page toward the first: remove original page 6, then original page 2. Earlier positions then stay stable while you work. Still inspect the selected page before each deletion.
Remove the confirmed blanks in AlphaPDF
- Keep your original. Save a source copy, then open the scanned PDF in the AlphaPDF PDF editor. Check the current upload limits and export allowance on that page before starting.
- Inspect a candidate. Select its thumbnail in the page rail and look at the large preview. Match the content and position to your notes.
- Remove that page. Use the page toolbar control titled Delete page. This is different from deleting the entire workspace in Recent documents.
- Check the new boundary. Read the pages immediately before and after the removal. If you removed the wrong page, use Undo immediately.
- Repeat only for confirmed blanks. Track how many pages you remove. Do not assume all reverse sides are alike.
- Export one document. Choose One PDF and save the download as a new copy with a recognizable filename.
This is a manual page-review workflow, not an automatic blank-page detector. If the unwanted page contains repeated information rather than nothing, use the comparison checks in the duplicate-page removal guide.
Check the downloaded PDF before sending it
Open the actual download. Its page count should equal the source count minus the number you deliberately removed. For the example above, that means four pages. Confirm that the faint note remains, every section is in order and nothing is cut off.
Page positions change when you remove pages; printed page numbers do not necessarily change with them. If someone gave you a required page range, recheck it against the content. For a larger packet, use the page-order checklist before handing it over.
Prevent unnecessary blank backs in the next scan
Adobe’s scanning guidance describes choosing front sides or both sides where the scanner supports it. If every sheet has content on only one side, a front-side scan avoids capturing empty backs. If the stack mixes one-sided and two-sided sheets, capture both sides and inspect the results so you do not miss information.
Removing blank pages is a way to tidy the page sequence, not a promise to meet a file-size limit. Keep a readable original and compare the finished copy with the source.
Open the AlphaPDF PDF editor to inspect your scanned pages and prepare a checked copy.
