How to replace one page in a PDF without keeping the old version

Replace an outdated PDF page with a corrected one, remove the old version and check the final order with a four-page worked example.

To replace one page in a PDF, add the corrected page, put it in the right position, remove the obsolete page and export a new copy. In AlphaPDF, this is an Add PDF + reorder + Delete page workflow. Simply adding the correction leaves both versions in the document.

Prepare the original and the corrected page

Keep your original PDF untouched. Save the correction as a separate, one-page PDF with an identifiable filename, such as report-page-3-corrected.pdf. Open it and confirm the revision date, heading and content before importing it.

If the correction is inside a longer PDF, first extract the selected page. This makes it easier to avoid importing unrelated pages. Note the target's position in the file as well as any number printed on the page: a cover sheet can make those numbers differ.

Replace the page in AlphaPDF

  1. Open the original. Go to Merge PDF, select the original PDF and wait for the editor to load. Inspect the target page in the large preview.
  2. Add the correction. Choose Add PDF and select the one-page replacement. Wait for its thumbnail to appear in the page rail. Adding a file does not remove the old page.
  3. Move it beside the old page. Drag the replacement thumbnail by its grip until it sits immediately before the outdated page. Check the content, not just the thumbnail number, because positions change as you move pages.
  4. Remove the obsolete version. Select the old page, confirm its content in the large preview and use the toolbar control titled Delete page. If you selected the wrong page, use Undo immediately and inspect the sequence again.
  5. Export the corrected document. Choose Export, select One PDF and save the result under a new filename when an export allowance is available. Keep the source until you have checked the download.

The page Delete control applies to the working document. It is different from deleting a stored job in Documents. For more on importing a correction into an open session, see adding a PDF to an existing workspace.

Worked example: replace page 3 of a four-page report

Suppose a report contains a cover, a summary, an outdated cost table and an appendix. You receive a corrected cost table as a one-page PDF. These are illustrative document labels, not a customer file.

StagePage orderTotal
OriginalCover → Summary → Old table → Appendix4
Correction added at endCover → Summary → Old table → Appendix → New table5
Correction moved before old tableCover → Summary → New table → Old table → Appendix5
Old table removedCover → Summary → New table → Appendix4

The check is 4 original pages + 1 replacement − 1 obsolete page = 4 final pages. Five pages suggests both versions remain. Three suggests an extra page was removed. A four-page total alone is not proof: the right pages must also be present in the right order.

Check the saved PDF, not only the editor

  • Open the downloaded file and read the replacement's revision date or corrected value.
  • Read the pages immediately before and after it. Confirm the summary leads into the new table and the appendix follows it.
  • Check orientation, margins and readability at a normal viewing size. A correct page can still look out of place if its source size differs.
  • Try any links or form fields you need in the finished document. Do not assume page assembly preserves every interactive feature.

Use the final page-order checklist before sharing. The live merge page also warns that combining pages can invalidate existing digital signatures. Keep the signed original and verify the finished file if signatures matter to the handoff.

Is this the same as a dedicated Replace command?

No. Some editors provide a separate command: Adobe's Acrobat replacement guide describes selecting the original and replacement page ranges. The AlphaPDF method above assembles a new page sequence. Do not assume behavior documented for another editor, including treatment of links and bookmarks, applies here.

Open AlphaPDF's merge tool to add the corrected PDF, arrange the pages and export the checked result. Review the tool's current file limits and export allowance before starting.
