How to convert PDF data to JSON and validate the rows

Inspect PDF table JSON, map rows to headers, parse numeric strings deliberately, and reconcile extracted totals before importing data. Includes a checked synthetic example.

To convert PDF data to JSON, first decide which data you need. For tables, use a table extractor, then compare the returned rows with the PDF before importing them. A valid JSON file can still contain missing rows, misplaced cells or text that needs deliberate number parsing.

AlphaPDF’s PDF tables to JSON tool targets tables rather than every paragraph on a page. This guide shows how to inspect its public synthetic example and prepare extracted values for a downstream application.

Choose table JSON or page text

You needCheck before choosing a workflow
Rows and columns from a reportUse table extraction and check headers, row order and totals.
Paragraphs and recognition blocks from a scanLook for an OCR workflow with the required output; table JSON is not a full-page transcript.
A spreadsheet for manual reviewSee the PDF table-to-Excel review guide.
Readable notes rather than recordsConsider PDF to Markdown and compare the extracted text with the original.

If you cannot select any words in the source, start with the PDF text-selection diagnostic. Do not assume a scan will produce accurate table data.

How to convert and review PDF tables as JSON

  1. Keep the source PDF. Identify the relevant pages and count the tables you expect. Note continuation pages, footnotes and repeated headings.
  2. Check access before uploading. AlphaPDF’s live tool requires an account with Premium access. As checked on October 19, 2026, the site says plan purchasing is not available here yet. Check current access information; do not assume you can buy access and run a job immediately.
  3. If you already have access, open the PDF tables to JSON tool. Upload the PDF, review the available settings and storage choice, and run the job. Save the downloaded result while it remains available.
  4. Open the JSON and parse it. Confirm that your JSON reader accepts the file. Then inspect its tables collection and the source-page references supplied in the result.
  5. Compare with the PDF. Check table count, header placement, row lengths and important values. Review every row needed for your import; sampling alone can miss a shifted cell.
  6. Map and validate before import. Decide how your application represents numbers, dates, missing values and source references. Keep the original extracted text alongside any normalized values until review is complete.

You can inspect the public example below without submitting a conversion. We reviewed that existing example for this article; we did not run a new paid job.

Worked example: two tables and a total that reconciles

The tool’s synthetic input PDF contains a budget summary and a maintenance schedule on one page. Its downloadable JSON result contains two table entries. The first has seven rows including a header and total; the second has five including its header. These counts match the example PDF.

In this result, a table includes page, table and rows. Each row is an array of cell strings. Here is one row from the budget table, kept in its original column order:

["HVAC maintenance", "R. Chen", "8,900", "9,640", "+740"]

The corresponding headings are Category, Owner, Budget, Actual and Variance. The row therefore describes a budget of 8,900, an actual of 9,640 and a variance of +740. The text "8,900" is not yet a numeric value in your program.

CheckObserved in the synthetic example
Budget detail sum, excluding the Total row60,450; matches the displayed total
Actual detail sum, excluding the Total row60,980; matches the displayed total
Actual minus budget+530; matches the total variance
Blank owner in the Total rowAn empty string; do not shift the remaining cells left
Maintenance due date“Oct 14” contains no year; do not invent one during import

This example demonstrates a review method, not an accuracy benchmark or a promise about other PDFs. A matching total also cannot prove that every description or date is correct.

Why numeric-looking cells still need parsing

The JSON standard, RFC 8259, distinguishes strings from numbers and defines arrays as ordered sequences. Quoted cells remain strings even when they look numeric. Preserve their order when mapping each row to its headings.

Choose parsing rules for the source’s locale and units. In the inspected example, commas separate thousands and a leading plus sign indicates a positive variance. Another document may use commas for decimals, parentheses for negatives or a dash for unavailable data. Do not apply a blanket “remove all punctuation” rule. Preserve identifier leading zeros, and use an appropriate decimal representation when exact monetary arithmetic matters.

What to do with empty or unexpected results

An empty tables collection means the tool did not detect tables. It does not establish that the source contains no data. Recheck the page, its text layer and whether the content is actually arranged as a table.

If a result has fewer cells than the header, repeated headings inside the data, split multi-line descriptions or a missing continuation table, stop the import. Compare those rows directly with the PDF and correct or re-extract them. Retain footnotes that change the meaning of the values. Do not silently fill missing cells or treat blank values as zero.

Next step: inspect the public input and result on PDF tables to JSON, then use the same row, type and total checks on your own authorized document when access is available.
