Why is a PDF signature invalid after editing?

Compare the original and edited PDF, distinguish content changes from certificate warnings, and inspect the signed revision before choosing your next step.

A PDF signature warning after editing can mean the signed content changed, a later revision needs inspection, or a separate certificate check failed. Keep the original signed file and the edited copy. Read the detailed result before assuming that every warning has the same cause.

This guide is about certificate-based digital signatures. A typed name, drawn mark or signature picture alone does not provide the same verification information. Adobe’s certificate-signature overview explains the use of digital IDs and signed document versions.

First, identify which check changed

  1. Keep both files. Give the edited copy a distinct name. Avoid overwriting the received signed PDF while investigating.
  2. Validate each file. In Acrobat, open the Signatures panel, choose Options and Validate Signatures, then inspect each signature’s details. Adobe’s validation instructions also show where to find certificate properties and timestamp findings.
  3. Write down the difference. Record the exact warning, which signature it concerns, and whether it appears in the original, the edited copy or both. Do not reduce an integrity, trust or timestamp finding to one unexplained “failed” label.

A warning in both files is not evidence that your latest edit caused it. A warning that appears only in the edited copy calls for a version comparison, rather than another export to hide the warning.

Not every later change has the same effect

Signed PDFs can contain later revisions. Certification permissions can allow particular operations, such as filling form fields or adding comments, while disallowing others. That does not make arbitrary page edits safe. Adobe’s modification-detection documentation describes these permission settings.

  • Page text, images or page arrangement changed: investigate the signed revision and the current content. Do not infer preservation from an unchanged signature picture.
  • A form answer or comment was added: inspect the document’s permissions and the actual validation result; do not assume the operation was permitted.
  • The warning concerns an untrusted certificate: keep that separate from whether the signed content passed its integrity check. Changing trust settings is not a repair for changed content.

Compare the signed version with the edited copy

Acrobat provides commands for viewing signed versions and comparing them with the current version. Follow Adobe’s signed-version comparison guide, and inspect the reported differences alongside the signature findings.

Hypothetical example: you receive a two-page approval, then correct a date on page one in a working copy. The signature image on page two still looks identical. Keep approval-original.pdf and approval-date-edit.pdf. Validate both and compare page one with the signed revision. Record the date change and each file’s actual result. Two pages and an unchanged signature image cannot establish that the corrected date was signed.

If a corrected document needs a new signing workflow, ask the document owner for the intended unsigned source and signing steps. Keep the earlier signed original separately. Printing, flattening or redrawing a mark does not establish that the old digital signature covers the corrected content.

Inspect the findings with AlphaPDF

AlphaPDF Verify PDF signature describes a report covering integrity, revision coverage, certificate trust and timestamps. Review those fields separately for each file. For field-by-field interpretation, use our signature verification report guide. If the change was combining pages, see merging digitally signed PDFs.
